Palmeiras gym is lit with LED and meets ABNT standards

When we talk about lighting for gyms and courts, we don’t imagine that it’s essential to pay attention to some important factors so that the lighting in the place is efficient, i.e. it’s not enough to install a floodlight in every corner of the court and get good results. The Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (ABNT) establishes minimum levels of average illuminance according to the environment for gyms and courts in NBR 8837-1985.

Regardless of the sport practiced at the venue, the lighting project must comply with this standard, which in addition to defining levels of use as recreational, competitive and professional, guarantees good visibility at night and during the day, since the human eye sees differently in these two periods. Also, a good sports hall must take into account the uniformity of the light, the absence of glare, the height of the poles, a good level of color fidelity (CRI greater than 75), the appropriate light tone (color temperature 5000K upwards, i.e. white light) and the maintenance of the equipment. Considering all these factors, one of Brazil’s most traditional clubs, Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras, located in a prime area of the West Zone of São Paulo (SP), opted to use LED luminaires in the new lighting project.

The venue, which has a complete structure of activities, leisure and entertainment for its members, used LED projectors in the gymnasium with a capacity for 1,500 spectators. This project resulted in uniform lighting, without shadows or glare, allowing athletes to clearly perceive objects and demarcation lines. As well as complying with the technical standards and recommendations of the gymnasium’s sports disciplines, the LED lighting solution helped reduce electricity costs. There was also a reduction in the cost of maintaining the venue, thanks to the extremely long service life of the LED luminaires.

A total of 92 modular LED floodlights from the Indaiá Conexled range were used in this project. The line has a modular system that makes maintenance easy and provides optimum performance and versatility for applications in courts, gyms, warehouses, sheds, among others. It stands out for its modern and bold design with high mechanical resistance, as well as its easy installation and low weight. The Indaiá range uses Osram High Power LEDs suitable for professional lighting and in accordance with IES LM-80 guidelines. Due to the advanced optical system, the LED and lens combination provides high luminous uniformity and excellent light distribution, reducing glare and increasing illumination levels.
