Important concepts for lighting in refrigerators

In the refrigerator environment, lighting challenges are varied and among them we can mention the issue of humidity, constant washing, generally with high pressure jets and sometimes hot jets, resulting in thermal shock. In addition to the ambient temperature being below 0ºC inside the cold rooms.

What is IP?

IP is an international standard defined by the IEC 60529 standard to classify and evaluate the degree of protection of electronic products against parts of the operator’s body, dust, accidental contact and water. With the IP protection level in hand, it is possible to determine which is the ideal product to use in your LED lighting project.
The code that defines the IP degree of protection is made up of 2 digits, the first referring to solid particles and the second to liquids.

So, if a piece of equipment has an IP65 degree of protection, it means that it is completely protected against dust and protected against water jets. On the other hand, a device with an IP20 protection level is protected against solid objects larger than 12mm and cannot be left outdoors because it is not water-resistant and could therefore damage the internal part installed in the device.

After all, what is IK?

IK refers to impact protection. It varies from 0 to 10, and the closer to 10, the greater mechanical resistance it presents. A product with IK08, for example, has high resistance against impacts, such as falls, hammer blows, vandalism, etc.

When a luminaire passes resistance tests, its tests may show some damage to its casing, but no mechanical damage must be caused, and thus, the luminaire must continue to function without damage.
